BA cabin crew strike numbers

What are the real numbers in the BA strike debate?

Thursday 27 May 2010

Letter to the Editor from Mr Peter Newton

Dear Sir,

I find it difficult to judge the true level of support for the BA cabin crew strike. The union claim strong support whilst BA say that an increasing number of cabin crew are abandoning the strike and crossing the picket lines. They cannot both be right, so why can the facts not be published.

The same mystery surrounded the results of the ballot. The unions claimed that 70% supported the strike. Does that mean 70% of those entitled to vote or just 70% of those that did vote?

It is us the travelling public that are being affected by this strike and being used as ammunition by the union. If there genuinely is such a grievance that 70% of workers are willing to strike, then I am interested to know more. If, however, it is a very much smaller sub-section of the employees, then I would respectfully suggest that they either go back to work or find other jobs.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Newton

I have the same problem in deciding the rights and wrongs of this strike. I think if it is going to effect so many people and do such damage to our reputation and economy then we ought to be given the proper facts. This means an impartial review and publication, not the spin from one side or the other.
So, how many employees where entitled to vote?
What percentage actually voted?
What percentage of the employees voted for the strike?
Can BA or the Unite union answer please?

I think the ballot was open to 11,000 flight attendants.

There must be someone who knows the facts. Can't BA tell us?

I agree, if this is not the majority of workers voting, they should just suck it up and get back to work.

Unite are not going to admit to the figures. They have a few activists and a lot of sheep that just go along for an easy life. This strike and the new plans that they talk about for the summer are just crap. They will not be happy until they have brought down the airline and costs a lot of jobs.

All of this could soon be old news. BA do seem to be winning. If their figures are correct, they are getting more and more of their flights flying without the striking cabin crew members. There are going to be a few job losses to come !!
