Last week, I received an e-mail from one of our readers. I nearly deleted it in annoyance as my initial instinct was that she was being alarmist and downright stupid. Having cooled down, I have to say that she might be right.
She made the point that any alliance between British Airways and American Airlines would pose an increased risk of terrorism. Specifically, she wrote that “a dual-flagged British-American airline would be a prime target for attack”.
I have already voiced my dislike of the BA-AA merger on commercial and competition grounds but this was, for me, a step too far.
Ignoring my other concerns, I would be gung-ho for painting the aircraft with a big Union flag and Stars and Stripes (with apologies to Iberia). But, what if the correspondent is right?
There are a lot of dangerous people out there and they do not play nicely.

I hate the idea of giving in to the threat of terrorism but i do understand the point here. I suppose we have to be careful and recognise that we love our life and families more than our freedoms. | |
