I have a number of pet grumbles and one of these is the way that passengers and their children behave around baggage carousels.
In my simplistic view of a polite society, the bags go round, you watch and wait for yours to appear, and then you step forward to take it off the carousel. To help you, the airport has painted a yellow line about six feet from the carousel with the intention that you STAND BEHIND IT.
Why do people not understand this? Is it only me, or do other people fume at the ignorant, rude and impolite people that stand right next to the carousel so that I cannot even see my bag, let alone get to it. The fact that these people feel the need to have their trolley with them plus all of their family and friends is completely beyond me.
In my world, one person gets the bags and the rest of the hoard stand well clear and out of everyone’s way.
I would like to grumble about the children as well but that will make me sound like a sad spoilsport. It must, after all, be exciting for a child to play dare-devil with the moving band. And, as these parents will know, there is always an emergency button that will stop the band and delay the whole process for an hour or so.

Yes, I also fume about the sheer ignorance of people and they way they stand completely on top of the carousels, I am only short, and get a few tall people in front and I don't stand a chance! It seems with have a problem with being polite in this country.

It is sad that reclaiming your baggage from airport carousels is such an ordeal. Politeness seems to go out of the window for many tired and jet-lagged passengers wanting to get out of the airport and home.

I guess airports just do not have the manpower to enforce these baggage carousel boundary lines, it would make the process a hell of a lot smoother if they did.

The worst experience I had from baggage carousels was at Tunis airport where I saw a woman (I believe American or a Canadian) allowing her daughter to ride the moving conveyor belt like a running machine, jumping over the odd bag as it came along, how inconsiderate can people be!?

Baggage carousels are often running too fast to comfortably remove heavy luggage without bumping someone with it! I can understand airports need a quick turnaround, but slowing them down a bit might make the process a bit easier for travellers.

The art of being polite does seem to go out of the window at the baggage carousels it would seem, I hate it all the pushing and shoving and the dirty looks if you get in the way, you would have thought everyone would be in a good mood after just having a holiday!

I blame the parents ! I watch with horror at the behaviour of the travelling public - and it is not just the children. Catriona is absolutely right in what she says and in the behaviour she describes. People just have no regard for others. I too stand back behind the line and try to watch for my luggage. Ideally, when it arrives, I will step forward, collect it and then take it to my trolley. How difficult is that? Do people need an instruction manual? My father reckons that he is becoming a grumpy old man. I think I am catching him up. Do people really have to behave this badly?

I blame the parents too! Catriona, you moan as much as you like, carousels can be so infuriating and people do not stand back in order for you to retrieve your bags, I have almost landed on top of the carousel on more than one occasion in the pure pursuit of my bag!

I was at Gatwick yesterday and saw the bad behaviour first hand. I remembered your article and smiled to myself.

I enjoy reading the report, too. It is easy to understand that a journey like this is a big event in ones life.
