EasyJet has confirmed that it is to open a new base in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, and a new destination of Asturias in Northern Spain. This will be in addition to its five new services to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bordeaux and Venice as well as its 16 existing routes.
EasyJet, Britain's largest budget airline sees Lisbon as a valuable addition to its already glowing list of holiday destinations and with 21 routes from Lisbon and 150 flights expected to leave each week, holiday goers and workers alike will have much wider range of choices and destinations to visit.
Catherine Lynn, EasyJet's customer and revenue director said:
"We are delighted to be confirming EasyJet's new base in Lisbon. It illustrates our long-term commitment to the market and it will enable us to grow our operations further. Along with significantly contributing to the local economy, our new base will also boost visitors to Lisbon - with over 2 million passengers travelling to and from Lisbon, and 4 million in and out of Portugal in the first year"
The airline company has stated that it intends to employ around 100 new employees, mainly cabin crew and pilots, to help kick start the base's operations. This will of course benefit the local economy in Lisbon, creating a few more jobs for people and maybe more in the foreseeable future and also creating more jobs in the destinations in which the base aims to travel to.
EasyJet have always aimed to help local economies by creating more jobs for people in their bases as stated in their corporate objectives, and the new base in Lisbon will only help to establish a good level of corporate responsibility for the budget airline.
The new base is expected to open on the 19th April 2012, with ticket sales going online on 10th November 2011.
