The EU rules specify that if your flight is cancelled or delayed, then the airline must provide you with accommodation, food and limited telephone calls during the period that you are delayed.
In the event of a cancellation, the airline must allow you to re-book at your convenience and at no extra cost to you.
The rules cover EU based airlines wherever they fly and non-EU airlines (eg American) if the flights starts or ends within the EU area.
