Christmas has officially landed at the UK's second largest airport - Gatwick - with an emphasis placed on fun and traditional festive cheer for the one million passengers expected to fly through the airport between 16 December and 2 January.
To kick start the festive season, Gatwick launched its Christmas Charity Appeal with the help of The Mayor of Crawley, cast members from Peter Pan, Father Christmas and students from the Ifield Community College Choir who all burst into festive song around the giant Christmas tree in the new look North Terminal.
The money raised will go to Gatwick's annual chosen charity, St Catherine's Hospice, and Gatwick's on-airport charity partner, Travel Care. Last year, Gatwick's passengers and staff showed tremendous generosity by raising over £2,000 for charity.
With the support of everyone at the airport, Gatwick hopes to exceed the total raised for charity this year.
Christmas is an exciting time for everyone, particularly for children, and Gatwick wants to bring some of that Christmas fun to passengers this year. Gatwick has installed a snow slide in the newly extended North Terminal, providing some light-hearted Winter fun in the warmth for adults and children alike.
Samba musicians will help create a bit of a party atmosphere as passengers wait to board their flight and passengers who need to do some last minute Christmas shopping can mooch around the Christmas Market Stalls and take advantage of the free wrapping service being provided.
Tina Oakley, Gatwick Airport's HR Director said, "Supporting our local community and making the airport experience an enjoyable one is important to us at Gatwick, especially during the festive period, which is why we are celebrating this year's Christmas Charity Appeal in a big way. "Throughout this month, we have planned a whole range of festive activities to entertain more than one-and-a-half million passengers expected to travel through the airport. Passengers can take a thrilling ride down our snow slide, buy treats from the Christmas markets and listen to performances from over 20 local choirs and music groups. There really is something for everyone this Christmas at Gatwick."
