Will our ships fit into the Channel ports?
|
Eugene Gold Sunday 18 April 2010 |
I am not sure whether I want to laugh or cry. Probably, as I am not stranded, laughing is in order.
Gordon Brown said he plans or planned to send Royal Navy ships to repatriate stranded Britons. The MoD have apparently advised that it would not be appropriate to use HMS Ocean or the aircraft carrier Ark Royal because, not least, both ships were too big to get into the Channel ports. The advice from Gordon Brown’s press office is that the plans are still active which suggests that there is some doubt about the MoD’s advice.
Interesting – I wonder if we will ever know the truth.

Brown is an idiot. He could have made himself really popular if he had done this right. Churchill was long before my time but I read that he was the kind of PM to make things happen. Doing something really positive would have been seen as such a good thing to do.

Remember that we are members of the EU. We cannot just send warships into other members' ports. Anyway, why do we need warships? how about more hospitals or homes for the aged.

It is so embarrassing being British. I live in Spain and Spanish people ask me what is happening. I have to try to explain that we do not seem able to do anything right.

I read that this was part of a pre-plan that was being considered if things went on for an extended period. Probably, the guy in charge of this was the same one in charge of the Pope's visit and it was 'blue sky' thinking.

This is all pretty sad and an awful reflection on what our country has become. I will not say we are a laughing stock but just say that people are no longer surprised when we mess up. Just how difficult was this task? You have people stuck and you want to help them get home. So, you arrange for collection points and tell people to head for those. It does not have to be free, it just has to be available and efficient. I go to football and I know the coach will be at a certain place to go to the match and then at a certain point to come home. We are just ordinary footy fans and we manage without any difficulty - how can it be so hard for the government?
