As a sign that the BA-Iberia merger is progressing albeit not without its problems, Iberia has exercised an option to buy five Airbus A320 planes at about USD$300 million before promptly selling them to British Airways. The aircraft were part of Iberia's massive fleet replacement deal, signed in 2005, for 30 A320s plus 49 options for 2011 delivery.
With hopes of EUR€400 million of annual savings, the tie-up is due to be completed by the end of the year. However, BA may not be that pleased to pick up these costs at this time.

BA are being very clever here, the tie up with Iberia gives them support from the EU as they are effectively saving a national carrier. We have to be a bit worried because Willie Walsh is a very clever man and there is a big agenda here that we maybe are not seeing.

They signed 'a formal agreement to amalgamate their operations'. Is that actually a merger then? Or is it just glorified code sharing? Whichever - it isn't going to be a world beater is it? Two airlines with poor reputations clinging on to each other as they go down more like.

What with the Spanish owning the airports and now the merger of BA with a Spanish airline we might see some changes. Whether that is good or bad remains to be seen.

Brilliant! Merge two loss making airlines and together they might outdo RBS and make the biggest loss of all time.
