Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Snow shuts down UK airports as complaints grow.

Airports were shut, trains were stranded and roads were closed in Britain on Thursday amid a week-long freeze that has sparked questions about why the country grinds to a halt when snow falls?

snow_heathrow.jpgGatwick Airport, Britain’s second busiest airport was closed for the second consecutive day and snow also shut a number of other smaller airports including Scotland’s main airport Edinburgh. This led to the cancellation of hundreds of International flights. Hundreds of rail commuters also spent a freezing night aboard an abandoned train and many other trains were cancelled in southeast England.

As a result, the government started an urgent review of how Britain's transport systems were performing amid criticism of the country's preparedness for the icy conditions and a lack of communication to commuters.

Transport minister Philip Hammond said while Britain had built up stockpiles of salt to treat icy roads after supplies ran short last year, he was concerned at the state of transport since the freeze started last week.

"I share the frustration of the travelling public and we need to be sure that we are doing everything possible to keep Britain moving," he said.

"Unfortunately, in extreme weather conditions some disruption is inevitable but there is no excuse for poor communication with passengers and motorists."

Air travellers complained they had made their way to Gatwick because they were told flights were likely to resume on Thursday, only to find all flights were cancelled until at least 0600 GMT on Friday.

Forecasters offered some respite, predicting that the wintry weather will ease slightly on Friday.

I was due to fly to Murcia on Wednesday on a trip that I had won for achieving targets at work. I have been looking foward to the trip for weeks, however there I was on Wednesday evening unpacking in Meopham. My colleague made it to Gatwick but my taxi was unable to get to me to take me to the airport and whilst debating whether or not to dig my car out of the drive I heard that Gatwick had closed. Another embarrasing let down by the transport system.

This week has proved that out transport system is a joke. For the last week or so all we have heard on the news is that snow is expected and hey presto as we expected it arrived. However the transport systems were all totally unprepared and as usual the great British public are the one's who suffer.

My mum is due to fly home from Spain tomorrow but she may not by able to get here, this is due to the snow. As she is flying from Murcia which is a small airport she can not fly in to Gatwick. Even if she did manage to make it to Gatwick we would not be able to collect her because of the conditions of the roads.

A week after the snow arrived the country is still in a state. Today was my first for a week that I have been able to make it into work and the roads are still chaos. The transport system is a complete let downa nd urgently needs reviewing.

The roads in Sidcup are not too bad any more. The ice is still treacherous on the pavement but that is understandable. All the buses and trains are running as usual.
