If you have not been to this once-a-decade event, may I please urge you to do so. It is on now and runs through to October 3rd. It has been played 40 times since 1634 and is a quite fantastic experience.
Set amidst the Bavarian Alps, surrounded by mountains, full of tradition and with only 5,000 inhabitants, Oberammergau is a truly beautiful village. Almost every house is lovingly painted with traditional Bavarian motifs and décor.
The play is performed by the villagers and the ancient rules specify that only residents born or having lived in Oberammergau for at least 20 years are allowed to participate. About half of the villagers volunteer and receive just pocket money for their trouble. Any profit made by the Passion Play is re-invested in the village.
The Passion Play apart, the main industry in Oberammergau is wood carving, mostly hand-made sculptures depicting local and religious history. Oberammergau is surrounded by other Bravarian landmarks including Linderhof Castle, the monastery of Ettal, and the fairytale castles in Füssen.
I really do recommend this event.

| The history of this event is fascinating. I have read that in 1634 the Oberammergau residents vowed that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play every ten years thereafter for all time depicting the life and death of Jesus. | |

| Viator are offering some very reasonable last minute package deals from around £580 for a 3 day stay in Oberammergau for the Passion Play in August and September. | |
