How do we know who is right and who is wrong ?

I wrote yesterday (Volunteers please !!) that the airlines were making lots of noises about the closure of air space being an unnecessary overreaction. I learn today that the association representing European airline pilots are warning against making "rash" decisions to allow planes to fly through the ash clouds.
Martin Chalk, a professional pilot and president of the 40,000 member European Cockpit Association said: "I don't think there is a definitive answer to whether it is safe or not … We would be concerned if decisions are taken under such enormous political and commercial pressures."
Meanwhile, the CAA announced the reopening the small sectors of UK airspace. Whether flying through only small amounts of volcanic rock, glass and ash results in only small crashes, is another matter.
