The Ryanair concept of standing passengers will, no doubt, come in the future but, just like in Star Trek, passengers will have to sit for the take-off and landing.
As for today, the European Aviation Safety Agency specifies that a seat (or berth for a non-ambulant person) must be provided for each occupant who has reached his or her second birthday.
The rules relating to seats are stringent with restraint requirements for take-off, landing and turbulence. Seats also have to be fire-resistant, crashworthy and able withstand to both fore-aft and lateral forces.
I am sure we will see changes but I am not holding my breath.
