Security called into question as bomb is detonated in Moscow Airport
|
Kayte Platts Tuesday 25 January 2011 |
Airport security fears were raised today after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a busy arrivals hall at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport. Officials said the bomb killed at least 35 people and injured more than 100 – many of them critically.
President Dmitry Medvedev ordered increased security across Moscow's airports and other transport hubs and vowed that those behind the attack would be tracked down and punished.
This represents an new concern for all of us passing through airports either travelling or simply meeting friends and loved ones. There are so many areas that lack the amount of security that is now so evidently needed.
The arrivals hall is a significant target for this type of attack with maximum impact by maiming and killing a large number of innocent people.
We are all subjected to many security checks before boarding an aircraft and I, for one, have absolutely no problem with this. However, it really amazes me that there is not more security in these vast public areas.
I am certain there are surveillance cameras, but one cannot watch everyone all of the time. We may have to accept increased security to enter the airport, be it the arrivals or departures halls.More ‘sniffer’ dogs would be a good idea, along with more armed police patrols.
The main thing is for us, the passengers, to remain vigilant at all times. If you see something suspicious, report it at once. It may be insignificant but you couild just be saving some lives.

This is a real worry, how unprotected are we in airports? I am due to go on holiday shortly and am now very concerned.

We really need as many security checks to take place as is humanly possible when going through airports. I feel very few people would have any objections to this. Safety after all is paramount surely?

I agree with Samantha, this is a real worry for us all. There are certainly areas which are still open to attack within an airport, we have all got to be on our guard when travelling as Kayte suggests.

Security at airports is a huge concern. There are not nearly enough checks and I for one would be very pleased for the checking in procedure to take longer if it helps prevent such tragic events like the ones we seem to be seeing more and more of.

This was very shocking and just went to prove how lax some airports are. There are still gaps and not enough checks, we all have to be on our guard at all times and be aware of what is going on around us. In this instance no one could have foreseen what was about to take place.
