Snow ploughs - a necessary investment

Why is this so difficult?

Just why was there so much chaos on our roads and at our airports?snow plough 1.jpg

We had ample warning of impending snow and we have had the experience of recent winters from which the authorities promised to learn.

Much has been said about the need for further investment in snow ploughs and snow blowers and the risk that these will only be needed occasionally. The same argument could, of course, be used against fire engines, escape shutes and even trained fire fighters.

The simple fact is that snow-moving equipment is readily available. It would be nice to think that we could purchase from a British manufacturer, but certainly companies such as Schmidt of Sweden manufacture and sell these internationally.

Surely, all one then needs is a storage facility and a maintenance man who services them during the summer such that they are ready for the winter. I can see no reason why they should not last 20 years. If we do not get any snow, then they will last even longer.

None of this is especially difficult. Countries such as those in Scandinavia manage because they have plans and are prepared.  Their costs of preparedness are easily justified as annual snow is pretty much guaranteed.

Hitherto, we have dodged the issue by saying that snow does not come that often but, after three bad winters, we cannot keep on using that excuse.

Surely, we now have to realise that the cost of un-preparedness far outweighs the required investment cost.

Government is running out of excuses...
In my opinion there is need to buy those machines as global warming is progressing and we are going to have worse and worse winters coming.

Whilst I hate the assumed connection between global warming and a few bad winters, I do agree that the weather pattern is changing and we are likely to have more bad winters.
So, let us get the equipment in place. Even if we do not need it for a few years, it is an investment and the cost is quite small.

The investment would be brilliant. It would decrease the economic damage when harsh winters arrive. Like "a stich in time" it might save the country a fortune.

After the last month or so, I totally agree that whilst snow ploughs are hopefully are not going to get used regularly they are a necessity as the UK airports cannot cope without them.

All to little too late, it does seem that it really does not matter how much warning we get they never get it right and are unprepared. I had to spend several days stuck at home because I could not get out of my road. As a result I was not paid and it could not have come at a worse time of year with Christmas.

This is very embarrassing. It makes one sad to be British. Why do we always make such heavy weather (no pun intended) of simple tasks?
