Survey proves women do actually take 'everything but the kitchen sink' on holiday!

According to a recent survey from Gocompare.com women just do not know when to stop when packing a suitcase!

The average woman over-packs her holiday suitcase with 26 items which will never see the light of day, according to Gocompare.com research.

stuffed-suitcase2.jpgA detailed study found typically a woman needs 34 separate items for a week-long break - but packs 60 "just in case'. This means almost HALF of the contents of her suitcase will remain untouched for the entirety of the sunshine break.

Indeed, 58 per cent of women find it nigh on impossible to stay within their designated weight limit when going on holiday. However, 77 per cent claim they like to pack extras of everything in case they can't decide what to wear when abroad.

Jeremy Cryer, head of travel at Gocompare.com, said: "Women are notoriously bad for making decisions on what to wear day to day, let alone for a seven day break. "Women like to prepare for every eventuality - which means packing for all weathers, the possibility of day trips, evenings out, sports and activities, you name it.

"Whereas the average man would probably pack no more than a couple of pairs of shorts for a sunny holiday, women like to have several choices of outfits for both day time and evening."

The results show the average female will pack 19 tops for her holiday - including t-shirts, cardigans, blouses and evening tops - but will only wear 10. She will also cram the case with 16 'bottoms' - such as trousers, shorts and leggings - but will come home with eight unworn.

A further five accessories such as hats, sarongs, pashminas and sunglasses will return home unused, after women pack a total of nine.

Female holidaymakers will also return home with one pair of shoes which never made it out of the suitcase, a spare bikini and a couple of pieces of underwear.

Even hand luggage causes problems for women as they struggle to fit everything into their handbag.

The average female's holiday handbag has to fit everything from beach reads, phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, sun tan lotion, and sunglasses.

Jeremy continues: "Packing for a holiday requires a certain amount of organisation, and it certainly pays to work out what you need in advance.

Being a woman myself, I do have to of course, strongly disagree with everything of the above!

My wife is known to her friends as TNT because she ships things out and then ships them back.
Talk about overpacking - even her shoes have airmiles.

Weird - we seem to share the same wife. Mine does exactly the same.

Prior to having a child I have to confess that I to over packed and my husband usually ended up paying huge amounts at the airport because of it. However I now find myself packing nearly half the amount I used to but now over pack my daughters clothes etc, so it still ends up costing my poor husband a fortune!

I am not guilty of over packing but my husband would be the first to admit that he is. So let us not forget that some men are worse that women.

The problem lies in that because most women pack for the whole family, it is easy to blame us for over packing for ourselves. I imagine if you looked through the cases you would find that we actually over pack for everybody!

I do not overpack, I wear everything that I take. My husband under packs and survives with a couple of pairs of short and a few soft shirts.
Given the choice, I think I have the balance right.

My suitcase this year was half the size of my husbands weighing in at just 14kg!!! whereas my husbands was only just under the 20kg. He packs 'FAR MORE' than me. This was for a 2 week break to Mexico.

I work hard to unable me to buy new holiday clothes; therefore obviously I am going to take them with me. In order for the new outfits to look there best I also need to back relevant accessories, so in truth yes I do over pack but what the hell!!!
