What price to the public from further strikes?

The chaos of striking Firefighters and Security Guards is set to hamper holiday makers if it goes ahead next week. BAA is meeting at present with representatives from Unite to try and avert the strike as members of Unite turn down the most recent pay offer of 1%.
The transport and general workers union that are employed by BAA at Heathrow, Stanstead, Southampton, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh voted in favor of strike action and as a direct result these airports could be forced to close causing unprecedented disruption as a result.
There is no denying that these men and women provide such a valuable service and without them there is no doubt our lives are in danger, such is the case with firefighters. We take it for granted that these professionals are always there at our ‘beck and call’ and In my view they do deserve more money, however, at what price?
Many families save all year for a two week holiday and in present times this is an expensive ‘extra’ that many struggle to provide for their children and therefore this could not come at a worse possible time. It is after all, the ‘height’ of the holiday season. Why else would you propose to hold strike action if you were not keen to cause as much disruption as possible? It is wholly unfair to involve the general public and cause unnecessary misery.
Let us hope common sense will prevail and avert this action, so that thousands will be saved from this inevitable chaos.
What is the answer?

The simple idea would be to send the striking Unite members to Afghanistan. They might then find out a bit about workers' rights and freedom. | |
