Watching and waiting from a floor at Heathrow

The new arrivals walked past my bed and on to the plane

I feel very sorry for all the people stuck at our Heathrow refugee camp just before Christmas.snow heathrow camp.jpg

I am also somewhat bemused by the rules, or perhaps more correctly, the effect of the rules on the order of departures.

As I understand it, people with confirmed bookings for cancelled flights on say, the Sunday, may have slept two nights on the floor and then, on the Tuesday, were forced to watch as newly arriving passengers departed without delay.

Clearly, the Tuesday people had tickets for flights that were actually departing. The Sunday people had lost their flights and would have to wait until seats became available.

I have no complaints about this and it is probably the only course that the airlines can follow. However, part of me does wonder if, once things get as bad as they did, some form of emergency rescheduling might become necessary.  I know this would have to be handled on a case by case basis and so would be inherently unfair and open to yet more criticism.

I really do not have any answers but I feel embarrassment that our premier airport has been shown to be so inept again.

What a disappointment just before Christmas. It is a shame we can not do any thing to help passengers when the heavy snow arrives as it is to powerful for our technology.

I was one of those people camped out on the floor at Gatwick and I can tell you Catriona has a real point. It was so disheartening to watch people coming straight in and boarding flights. It ruined the start of what should have been a fantastic holiday.

There are so many might have beens and lessons to be learned that it is easy to give up. There will be report and numerous meetings and people will get paid for writing and reviewing but I doubt if much will be achieved.
Britain used to be great at coping with problems. Our grand-parents went through wars and managed all kinds of hardships - we seem to have lost that courage and strength of character.
