Minimal take-off window at Manchester
|
Eugene Gold Friday 16 April 2010 |
Just after noon today (Friday), Manchester airport was opened for just 30 minutes following advice from NATS to allow two inbound landings, one from Vancouver and another from Barbados.
Another aircraft departed for Orlando (Sandford), Florida to pick up passengers that were stranded there. To add insult to injury, the break in the ash cloud was so short that there was no time to load the passengers that were waiting in departure to go to Florida – so the plane took off empty !

That is just crazy - why could the passengers not have been pre-warned and loaded onto the plane?

I suppose that the plane then just sat at Orlando for next few days.

Nice story but it does show just how tough it has been on those having to make the hard decisions. Do we delay, take on passengers and risk missing the window of opportunity; or we go as we are and risk the ridicule of the media? Most of the guys on the front line did a good job in very difficult conditions.

Well they need not have rushed, I bet they did not get back for days.
