Foreign Office advice to stranded Britons
DaveReiss's comment 18 April 2010, 06:25PM

I spoke to my brother on the telephone as he is stranded in Orlando with his wife and kids. He cut a deal with the hotel and they were happy for him to stay on. He will make a claim with the airline and sort it all out later.
He said that it was astounding how many people seem witless and expect everything to be done for them. Many of them seem to want to make a profit out of the disaster and expect the airline (or someone) to pay them compensation.
He said one family of four claim to have no money and nowhere to sleep but still find time and money to spend in the bar. Sadly, it is mostly Brits that are causing problems. Other nationalities seem to get on with it and organise themselves.

Airport security madness
DaveReiss's comment 30 April 2010, 11:34AM

It does piss me off that I have to go though all this security because of the so called "Islamic threat". We really have to decide, and I guess the Islams have to decide whether they want to be part of a normal society.
We seem to have leant over backwards to give them resect for their religion. They have their mosques etc and we accept that but, if they want to live in Britain, they have to be part of our society and put their religion second. If they cannot do that then they should go to a county where Islam is the national religion.
My parents were CofE and went to church and sent me to Sunday school but they did not bang on about it all the time. They certainly did not want to blow people up with bombs, nails and ball bearings.

DVT from flying
DaveReiss's comment 21 May 2010, 09:12AM

This is a problem but I have always wondered why pilots do not suffer from it. After all, they sit down for the flight and you do not see them walking around the aircraft doing their exercises. So what why are they ok with it?

Travel insurance and road delays
DaveReiss's comment 21 May 2010, 09:17AM

I nearly (minutes to spare) missed a flight from Stanstead. My problem was partly roads but mostly the airport parking system.
There was a delay getting into the short-term car park because the barrier system was not working properly. So, if you are the car park operator and your equipment has packed up so that you cannot issue tickets, do you:
a) recognise it is your fault and just let people through.
b) hold everyone up whilst you think about how to make more money.
They chose option b) - bastards

Why are airplane toilets so small?
DaveReiss's comment 21 May 2010, 09:20AM

I sympathise with the disabled. I too have seen a disabled lady being manhandled into a toilet that was impossibly small for her. With all the disability ramps and access that we now have to have in offices and public buildings, the airline situation really is a bit of a disgrace.

BA cabin crew strike numbers
DaveReiss's comment 9 June 2010, 06:33AM

All of this could soon be old news. BA do seem to be winning. If their figures are correct, they are getting more and more of their flights flying without the striking cabin crew members. There are going to be a few job losses to come !!

Getting rid of the pilots
DaveReiss's comment 17 September 2010, 02:25PM

This is an interesting situation. Two pilot operation is probably no longer necessary but the public are never going to believe that from Ryanair.
Maybe, as we move bit further down the economic crisis we will see some changes.

Illegal and improper fines and charges
DaveReiss's comment 17 September 2010, 02:27PM

I really cannot understand how this situation has been allowed to develop. If we assume that it was a mistake (read massive management cock-up) then one would have thought that they would have taken some very public action to fix the problem.
How about a massive contribution to charity. It is not he whole answer but it would be a very good start.
